God won't put anything on us we can't handle...
Last month in September of 2012, my last blog was about living nine years after being sent home to die stage IV melanoma cancer. Since my latest blog, I have been back to my oncologist to get the results of the latest test, CAT scan and labs. For about the last four months I have been having severe pain in the left side of my chest, and running up under my arm. I have also been running a fever right around hundred degrees for the same amount of time. I knew there was something developing in my chest; however, I am still alive and able to function like normal in everything except for activities which require strenuous exertion. When I engage in activities like that, I become winded and sometimes there is pain. Sometimes what is worse than the pain is not knowing why there is pain. I have been dealing with this pain off and on since the stereotactic radiation that was done on me in 2010. At the end of 2011, my doctors wanted to remove part of my lung, again. After listening to everything they had to say, I told them that I was not going to have any invasive procedure. I told them that the metastasized melanoma cancer would grow out of control once they open me up. There are several trains of thought with regards to air spreading cancer. According to my one Dr. he told me that according to the book. My concerns were unwarranted. I immediately looked at him and ask him was that the book but when you finish reading it, it said the end. He peered above his glasses and smiled at me. He knew that I knew what I was talking about, and that faith that brought me this far. I truly believe that God gives the doctors the gift of healing and the knowledge of our bodies, by which they base their knowledge on proven science. In some cases they go outside of the box, because they are looking for that hope in medicine to be able to fix anything goes wrong with the human body. A doctor is just like any other test, machine or equipment that gives a picture of what is involved in certain circumstances. With this picture it is our ultimate responsibility to make a decision as to what we allow them to do in the name of science and medicine. Until a pet scan was run my oncologist was talking to me about going on chemotherapy to try and shrink the tumor that had been radiated in 2011. After the pet scan, she could not believe the results of the scan and that there was no cancer present anywhere in my body at that time. She told me I was a true miracle and asks me whatever I had to please share it with her. I looked up and said in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen! She told me that people with my cancer were not living and that she knew I was blessed. At the time I did not know that she was sick herself with cancer. She was forced to retire from the medical field to undergo life saving treatments to save her own life. Since our last meeting I have not seen her again, and have not been able to tell her how much she meant to me over the last years. I did however ask my doctor to pass on to her family, and to her my deepest regrets and offer my prayers. After receiving the results of latest CAT scan and labs, I was told that my tumor is now growing in my lung and that surgery is required. I told my doctor that I would be glad to go and listen to what the surgeon had to say and to be respectful of his position, but surgery was pretty much out of the picture as it had been in the past. I told him that in 2011 when we were working on my situation, believing the tumor was continuing to grow how I had gone back to Dr. Chang and discuss getting further radiation treatment in order to kill the tumor again. The radiation treatment that I received in 2010 is called stereotactic radiation. It is laser precise and penetrates from a 360° angle directly on the tumor with precision. It lessens the chance of burning up my body and the other organs around my lung. My doctor asked me could I get back in touch with Dr. Chang to make sure it was still a viable option, because he felt it had been almost 3 years since I've had the radiation treatment and I should be physically able to take treatment again. I am scheduled to see the surgeon sometime soon in the near future. I have not contacted Dr. Chang, yet because I want to wait until after I see the surgeon. I have been put back on morphine and Hydromorphone in order to fight the pain. Fortunately for me I have a very high pain tolerance and have only had to use the drugs a few times over the last few months. I see the drugs as a slippery slope and the fear that I have makes me apprehensive to the point I will endure the pain from the cancer, rather than take the drugs for the pain. I still have 6 lesions in my lungs that are not active right now. I am thankful that we live in a time where technology can work to help save a life by imaging what is going on inside of us. I am thankful to my doctors who have given me the best care I could ever hope to have received, and how through my faith they have experienced the miracles of my life, in theirs. God has brought me this far and through my faith, and I will continue to put my trust in Him. Through all of this extra time God has given me, I have had a chance to see my son die, my daughter get married and a grandson be born. He has given me a loving wife and two beautiful boys, whose father died when they were only six years old, and allowed me to be part of their life when they needed me. I have never questioned why to anything that God has put in my life were taken back.
